This piece was conceived as a proof of concept for integrating new media into an existing traditional art practice. The theme "the blank canvas" refers to the feeling that anything can be created when embarking on a new project.
I led a workshop titled "Interactive Activity: Collaboration, Technology and Public Art". We debunked a few psychological barriers to integrating technology into your art practice and then everyone was given the opportunity to participate in creating a new media installation and temporary exhibition. Although I advocated for an overall theme (confronting the blank canvas, a universal experience for artists working in all mediums) and structure, the piece only exists due to the unique contributions of the forty-plus artists (and a few non-artists) who worked on it with me. Nobody could have predicted the result. Only economically-priced retail products and software were used in the creation of this piece. For example, the animation at rear was created in about two minutes using Microsoft PowerPoint. Photography and video were shot either with smartphone cameras or a consumer-grade camcorder. What you are seeing in this video is documentation of the completed work, which took just a few hours to make.
