A thick-set man with a buzz cut, a corduroy suit, and a corduroy tie led a little girl into the room. Later, over lunch, Patty would say the girl had bangs so thick they looked like horns, but what stuck out to me was her dress, all candy-striped and tied up in a big bow at the back. A girl ready for dancing lessons, not square talk about boll weevils.
