Daupo, who is also known as David Clayton James Gassaway, is a New Yorker of Ohio ancestry. He has had little formal art training, having majored in English literature at Oberlin College, but he was an isolated, left-handed child, which counts for something.

In addition to numerous collaborations with the New York collective Flux Factory, daupo has worked with the New Museum, the Hungarian Cultural Center, Charmingwall Gallery, Chashama, subculture gallery, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Vision Gallery, LEAP, and finer cafes throughout New York. His illustration work has appeared in the Nation magazine and others. He currently resides in Ridgewood, Queens.

Daupo uses several media to explore visual narrative and the fundamentally lonely and terrifying nature of human life.
